The Saddle Line
by Norman Houghton
The book of 62 pages with more than 65 pictures and diagrams looks at the Moriac to Wensleydale Railway that operated from 1890 to 1948. The railway was built to assist agricultural development in the region but mostly went on to service the firewood, road gravel and coal industries that were established along the line. The railway was a light line using smaller engines such as the old R and D Classes, although the K Class traversed the line with military trains during the war. The book recounts the construction, operation, the traffic hauled and some of the problem issues with the line.
